How to Handle Loads Safely
Do not raise or lower the fork whilst the lift truck is moving. A load must not extend over the backrest because of the danger of the load sliding back in the direction of the operator. Check for overhead obstacles and make certain there is sufficient clearance prior to raising a load. Stay away from overhead power lines. When the load is raised straight up, tilt it slightly back.
The lift truck is less stable if a load is in a raised position. Make certain that no body ever walks underneath the elevated fork. The operator must never leave the lift truck while the load is raised.
The forks must be level when handling pallets, and high enough to extend all the way into and underneath the load. The width of the forks must provide even weight distribution.
Chock the wheels and set the brakes before loading and unloading the truck. The floors should be strong enough to support the weight of both the forklift and its load. Fixed jacks could be installed to support a semi-trailer which is not coupled to a tractor. The entrance door height should clear the forklift height by at least 5 cm. Mark edges of rail cars, ramps or docks and avoid them.
If there is not proper ventilation into the forklift, do not stay in there for long periods. The trucks interior should have adequate lighting and be free of obstructions. Check the flooring of the forklift cab for holes. The installation of nonslip material on the floor will help avoid slipping. Clear whichever obstructions from dockplates and docks and make certain surfaces are not oily or wet.
Never tow or push other vehicles using a lift truck.
